Things to do After the Move

It would be wrong to say that your moving process is over once you reach your new home. A follow up so as to ascertain whether the move is successful or not is still left. That done, settling into the new home and new environment is also essential. After months of planning, organizing, packing and moving, getting into your new home is not the end but a new beginning.

Getting the Damage Claim

Once you reach your destination, check whether the final price matches with the estimate price. Bill of lading should be kept handy. Next, check your goods for any kind of damages. You may request an agent of the moving company to inspect the damages. Generally, movers do not assume responsibility and replace the damaged items however they do repair them. Moving companies are not responsible for the items you packed, unless there is a proof to show that the items were not handled properly.

Insurance policies can get you the claim for the items damaged during the move. To get the claim, you must be able to provide a proof of damage. All you need to do is to document damage on delivery and file within nine months from the date of delivery. The claim gives an equitable settlement for the damage. Movers will not be responsive for unreasonable and unfair claims based on your personal value. Movers cannot be held responsible for items that were not damaged as a result of the move. or any damage caused by the weather.

Unpacking the Goods

Since you did not pack it all in a single day, do not try to unpack in one day. It is practically not possible to unpack everything at once, so prioritize unpacking the essential items first. These should include kitchen, bathroom, family room and children's bedroom items. Do not stress on decorations and paintings right now.

Acclimating Children to the New Environment

It is very important for you to make your children feel comfortable in the new house. Involve the kids wherever you can. Children might feel anxious and face trouble sleeping in the new bedroom so let them decide the setting for their bedroom. It would be a good idea to get the furnishings and belongings kept in their old room to get a sense of familiarity. Keep interacting with the kids and give them ample time. They may face problems adjusting to the new school, with new friends and other things. Help them in making new friends and do your best to let them stay in touch with their old pals. Make provisions for your children to go to new school and look for some leisure activities around.

Making the Pets Adjust In the New Environment

Introduce your pet to the new environment slowly, allowing them to get acquainted with the sounds and smells in the new home. It is best to let them explore the place on their own. Cats take more time to adjust than dogs. Cats should be confined to a single room in new house. When you take your dog outside make sure it is leashed at least till the time it feels comfortable with the new surroundings.

Get to Know Your Neighborhood

Interact with your neighbors and get to know them. This is important for your comfort as well as safety. Driving or walking around with your family is a good way of familiarizing with the surroundings. Get the community newspapers to keep yourself informed of the community happenings and other useful information. Also, look for free magazines available in local shops. To meet people and get the real feel of the community pay visits to local recreation centers. Find info about activities of your interests and keep checking community bulletin boards.

After the move, you might feel little depressed for a couple of days. However, gradually you will adapt to the changed surroundings and also feel good about it.
