Packing Essentials
Packing is the most crucial part of the whole moving process. Goods that are packed well have reduced chances of being damaged while moving. In addition to packing your goods well to prevent damage, it is also important that they are packed in a way that you do not face difficulty in finding the goods when you unpack.
When packing, use only corrugated cartons with covers. Most movers provide you with the cartons that are designed to provide maximum protection to avoid damage resulting from poor quality packing materials. You may also get boxes from food/grocery stores. However, make sure there are no insects or insect eggs in the boxes as these are commonly found in food boxes.
Packing Materials
Before you can start packing, you need to have essential materials that will help you pack your goods properly. Here is a list of items you must have before you start packing:
•Strong Packing Boxes •Bubble Wrap, Newspaper, Tissue Paper and Ink Free Packing Paper •Scissors •Markers and Labels (for identification of contents of a box)
•Packing Tape
•Wardrobe Boxes
•Knife (for opening boxes)
•Styrofoam •Notebook and Pencil
•Strong Cord/Twine (for sealing the cartons)
Wrap It Well
The items that break easily should be wrapped in bubble wrap, tissue paper or suitable wrapping paper. Using newspaper for packing may leave ink smudges on the goods. So, use newspapers only to cushion the items and fill up empty space in boxes. Old linens and blankets also be used to wrap and cushion fragile items.
You need to have proper planning before you start packing else the whole process would be very chaotic and tiring. Start packing only one room at a time and pack only a couple of cartons a day. Remember to mark all the boxes. This would be of great help when you unpack. Take a note of the total number of cartons packed and also note condition of the cartons at the time of packing.
The bottoms of the cartons should be well checked to hold the weight of the contents. Use smaller cartons for heavier items and bigger ones for light items. To make moving easier, keep the weigh of the boxes 50 lbs or less than that. Put breakable items in plastic storage bins and use a lot of bubble wraps. Pack non-breakable items in smaller boxes.
Do not pack any flammable or explosive items like acid, paints, kerosene, ammonia lamp oil, cleaning fluid, pesticides, motor oils, chemicals, etc. Perishable items like food and plants spoil easily so packing them is not a good idea. The items you do not need for daily routine must be packed first. Mark "fragile" on the boxes containing delicate breakable items. Important documents and other important items must be packed separately or you could place them in safety deposit boxes.
