Packing Guide - General Tips

Before moving you should make sure that all the items are packed well. Different items require different type of packaging. Start packing well in advance before moving. Even if the goods are insured you wouldn't be able to claim anything from the mover if the goods were not packed properly by you. Thus, it is important to use only good quality strong boxes when packing your goods. Here are a few tips to pack important household items:

High Value Items - Identify all high value items and take special care to pack them. High value items include antiques, crystal, precious stones, gems, video cameras, art collections and others.

Dishware - Choose a medium sized carton or get a dish pack from your mover to pack the dishware. Before putting the dishware in the box place crumpled packing paper at the bottom. Cover each plate properly with packing paper and place each of them one on top of the other. Wrap the entire bundle properly and then seal it with packing tape. The bundle should be placed in a way that the plates are standing on edge. Smaller dishes can be stacked into the box in greater number than bigger dishes.

Glasses - Before wrapping up the glasses/stemware, stuff them with packing paper or crumpled tissue. Put the glass on the corner of packing paper and roll two full rotations and pull sides of packing paper over glass. Use corrugated paper rolls for better protection. Crumpled packing paper should be placed in between each layer. Place heavier items like pitchers toward the bottom of the box and glasses toward the top of the box. make sure the delicate glassware is placed in an upright position.

Tables - Before packing a table, remove its legs and tie them together. Keep all nuts and bolts in one bag.

Beds - Tie all bed frames together with a rope and label the pieces so you do not have difficulty in reassembling them.

Appliances - All the household appliances such as fridge and dishwasher should be first emptied. Defrost them and clean the interiors properly.

Electronics: Pack electronic items like TV & computer in their original boxes. The original boxes are best for electronics. If you do not have the original boxes you can buy electronic-specific boxes.

Flammable Items: Never pack flammable liquids and explosives as these can leak or explode even with slight change in temperature. Remember, if these items cause damage to shipment you and not the mover will be held responsible.

Perishable Items: If your shipment is being transported for more than 24 hours from the time of loading then your mover is not allowed to accept perishable items like frozen food and plants. If move is of lesser hours, the frozen food should be packed in a freezer set at normal deep freeze temperature.

Cars/Motorcycles: Drain out all the fuel from automobiles and disconnect the motorcycle batteries. make sure there is enough automobile antifreeze for protection in winters.

Smaller Items - Pack the books flat in small cartons. The smaller appliances like microwave should be put in boxes and be cushioned with wadded paper. Clothing items including drapes and curtains should be placed in wardrobe boxes. You can either fold and pack the drapes in cartons or hang them over cross bars in wardrobe cartons. Cushion the kitchenware with paper and mark the box to be opened first.
