Business Items Storage Tips
A business may require to use storage unit for various reasons like lack of adequate space or high real estate prices. Self storage is a good option to store business items. Self storage is cost effective and convenient way of storing your business items. With self storage facility you can expand your business without having to expand the premises. A self storage unit remains in your possession and control.
When you select a storage space first inquire about the space that would suit your needs. If you have limited items, a smaller space would suit better and be less expensive than a larger space. In case you require the space often, then go for a larger storage space. Mostly, the storage facilities make modifications to suit your needs and some would even offer additional services.
The goods you store must be insured as the self storage facility will not be responsible for insuring the items. Contact company's insurance provider to inquire about the coverage policies. Do not store any hazardous or flammable item; perishable item or illegal items.
Be sure of the security arrangements in the facility. Normally, a storage facility has full time security coverage, CCTVs, fire alarms in the building, burglar alarms, etc. It is important that only you have access cards and keys to your goods.
Some items need special environment when stored. Storage facility may charge you a little extra for providing climate controlled space. For example, files and papers may rot in high humidity area. So, you need to store these in the area with restricted humidity.
Here are a few tips for storing important business items:
•Documents, Records and Papers – When storing documents and files, use packing cartons or archive boxes as these will best protect your goods. Label the boxes properly so that you can easily identify the contents. Place the lighter boxes on top and heavier ones at the bottom.
•Electrical Equipment- Any electrical equipment you store must be thoroughly cleaned and dry before it is stored. Keep the doors of equipments like refrigerator slightly open to allow aeration.
•Furniture – While storing office furniture place a plastic sheet or cardboard mat on the floor. Remove the legs of the furniture to prevent damage. Place dust cover over the furniture.
•Fabric Items – Store all items in clean area that is free from pests and insects. Protect the goods with boxes and packing materials. Self storage facilities generally sell these.
•Metal Items- Metal items should be clean and dry before they are stored. Oil the rust prone items to prevent them from rust.
•Fragile Items – Such items require special care. The boxes having fragile items must have a layer of packing at the bottom and top. The items must be packed separately and should not bang with each other. Do not place any heavy items over these boxes. Label the boxes as “Fragile” so they are handled accordingly.
