Household Items Storage Tips

 

When moving, you need to keep in mine that different household items need to be handled in different ways. While certain items are to be stored in climate control area, some items require special handling. Take due care in storing the goods properly. Get most out of the storage unit by placing the items the right way. You should have proper access to your goods, therefore, leaving spaces in between is important. Do not keep any hazardous substance with your household items.

 

When packing your stuff, fill the box to capacity and add crunched paper or Styrofoam to fill any empty places. Make sure a box is not over filled as it may cause breakage. Put similar items in one box, like separate boxes for books and appliances. This makes handling easier. Here are a few tips on how to handle and store some important household items.

 

Home furnishings- Storing clothes and furnishings properly in wardrobe boxes is important to retain their shape. Put mothballs to protect clothes from insects and pests. Door of the furniture should be tightly shut. It would be a good idea to remove the legs from furniture items.

 

Home Appliances- Before packing and storing appliances like refrigerators, freezers, stoves, make sure they are dry and clean. Keep the doors of these appliances ajar to allow aeration.

 

Computer – Special care should be taken for electronic items like computers. Your computer needs particular attention while you pack, store and move your goods. First of all take a back up of all the files and programs. Place these back up disks in a secure container. The system should not have any floppies, disks or tapes. Printer, peripherals and other hardware should be well protected. Always shut down your computer before you unplug any cable. You could make a note of what cables were unplugged from what devices. Cables should be kept properly and make sure they are not crumpled. It is best to pack your computer system in the box it originally came in. Screen of monitor can break easily, if not handled properly. Put Styrofoam or bubble wrap to fully protect it.

 

Tools- Apply oil on items to prevent rusting, and make sure all tools are packed securely so that they cannot damage other stored items.

 

Metal Objects- Before storing any metal object place bubble wrap in the bottom of the box. Each piece should be wrapped separately. The wrappings should not have any chemicals as that can damage the items. Mark “fragile” on the box so that the box is handles delicately.

 

Glassware and Other Glass Items- Items like crystal, glassware, kitchen China, mirrors, windows, glass framed paintings and pictures should be packed in bubble wrap. These items should be packed separately without banging each other. Make sure your mark the boxes and no heavy item is placed on these.

 

Gardening Devices – For such items read the instructions in the manual provided. All fuel should be removed and lubricant level should be checked. Instead of putting these in boxes, wrap them in cloth tarpaulin.
